DESIGNER WATCH: Tsumori Chisato, Purveyor of Boho Whimsy
10.25.10Japanese designer Tsumori Chisato designed for Issey Miyake before striking out on her own with an aesthetic that includes youthful prints, colorful patterns, texture and beading. Part Parisian boho and part Japanese whimsy, Chisato designs for globe-trotting gypsets who want playful, yet luxurious, style to complement their nomadic lifestyle.
Check out some of the looks from her current collection below! Our faves include the two-tone chubby jacket, black cape with zig-zag pattern, floral print harem jumpsuit and sheer separates over cutout leggings.

The Fugly Continues: Christian Louboutin Louis Leopard Stud Sneakers
10.20.10The bad accident between high-end shoe designers and sneakers continues. Christian Louboutin’s Louis sneakers for men feature leopard fur (is it real?), and studs, studs, studs!
The mind reels and the pocketbook shudders. Who would wear something so utterly tacky, even ironically? Christian Louboutin should stick to making shoes like the Maralena, recently voted the world’s sexiest shoe. As for the Louis, let’s just call this the world’s most Kanye West shoe.

Turban + Headband = Turband
10.18.10The turban, the headband and their lovechild, the turband have been around since Nicole Ritchie and the Olsen twins brought them into boho vogue a few seasons ago. Oh, happy day! You, too, can emulate your favorite Olsen twin (it’s probably Mary-Kate, I’m guessing), courtesy of shops from Saks to Forever 21.
The Wild Thing Turband from Gold Saturn comes in a variety of colors and patterns, so you can match your turband to your shoes, the way any proper lady should.
This chunky Coal Peters Headband from ASOS will keep your forehead warm and fashionable.
For the peppy turband-wearer, nothing beats the Got It Going Pom Headband from Modcloth (except maybe real pom-poms).
For an apres-ski look, check out the Portolano Crochet Flower Headband from Saks. It looks so soft, doesn’t it?
And finally, for those of you who are leery of spending more than $5.80 on a passing trend, I present to you the Bow Knit Headband from Forever 21.

BCBG Getting In on the Body Jewelry Game
10.18.10This is a bit surprising. I wouldn’t think of BCBG as a place where I would go for body jewelry (not that they’re even shown on the body, but on blazers, weirdly), but, apparently, this is another example of the subversive moving to the mainstream, yet again. I just hope I don’t see my mother with a chain epaulet on top of a St. John’s suit or our local weather girls wearing them while talking about high pressure systems.

NARS Holiday 2010 Collection–More Than Just Makeup
10.17.10The Nars Holiday 2010 Collection is now out and features some amazing colors, including the Bad Influence nail polish (a smoky taupe) and the Bougainville lip gloss (deep pomegranate).
We met François Nars once, at a launch party for his 15 x 15 book, which features such luminaries as his muse, Daphne Guinnes, Marc Jacobs, Naomi Campbell and more–all dolled up and photographed by Nars himself. Nars Makeup is more than just makeup–it evokes history, romance and recalls great art.
About the collection:
OKINAWA
One of Japan’s most southern clusters of islands characterized by over
150 islands. The area boasts pleasant weather and good fortune. The first
eyeshadow trio for the brand is a striking triad of silver, deep cobalt blue and
black onyx. Like its namesake area, the three hues are exotic on their own or
work together in perfect harmony to create an essence of drama worked on lid,
crease, and brow bone.MÉLUSINE
In folklore tales, a melusine was described as a feminine, free spirited woman.
Similarly, this duo eyeshadow is an ultra-modern union of two colors working in
harmony. Sweep the bright deep purple across the lid and highlight under brow
with the pale silver lilac.ÉTRUSQUE
One of the richest western European cultures, the Etrusci people (of present
day Tuscany) shared their wealth: the Latin alphabet, unique artwork, and an
adoration of women. The antique gold hue is reminiscent of cast bronze art
for which the Etruscans were known. Applied wet or dry, this shadow virtually
washes the lid with glorious light.SEX APPEAL
You either have it, or…you can get it. For foolproof contouring, work this soft
peach blush under the cheekbone for depth; then apply upward at temples and
blend towards hairline. To add more heat, dust on the forehead, jaw line and nose.PETIT MONSTRE
Petit Monstre. Fr.:“Little Monster.” A lipstick that saturates lips in rich, luscious
berry pigment. Luminous and luxurious, this satin-finished formula can be
applied from the center of the lips, blending out towards the lip line.LITTLE DARLING
Romantic and eternally flattering. This classic, nude beige will so be your little
darling: a perfect neutral lipstick is flattering on its own or sheer enough to be
coupled with other NARS lip products.DOWNTOWN
Less a place and more a mentality. “Downtown” anywhere pulsates with people
on the go: doing, meeting, living life to the fullest. The metallic-pink lavender
lip gloss vibrates with party-perfect incandescence. With a touch of iridescent
shimmer, this lip gloss is the perfect finishing touch to any look.BOUGAINVILLE
Once a South Pacific paradise, today this copper-rich Papuan New Guinea
island is rich in culture. Reminiscent of its origin, this sensual pomegranate lip
gloss infuses lips with dramatic, diva-esque color. Deep in pigment yet sheer on
the lips, apply alone or over other NARS lip products.POKERFACE
The name might fool you… or is that the point? An expert poker player is free
from any expression, but this nail polish is anything but that. Vibrant, magnetic
purple orchid nail polish. Apply one coat for subtle lilac or two for high-gloss,
high luster brilliance.BAD INFLUENCE
Sensuous. Romantic. Warm and inviting. This smokey taupe nail polish is a
unique yet universal hue. Anything but boring. -
Fair Isle and Fabulous!
10.16.10According to the Ralph Lauren Style Guide Glossary, Fair Isle is defined as ” A colorful geometric design, often knit in soft, heathered yarns, named after one of the Shetland Islands in Scotland.” That’s all well and good, but the real question is: how cool is it that there’s a glossary on Ralph Lauren’s website?!
Anyway, the leaves are falling, the temps are a droppin’ and even though there are probably 80 scarves and hats in your closet ALREADY (don’t count them–the number will horrify you) nothing says winter like an accessory that reminds you of a Scottish island you’ve never visited.
This season, Fair Isle has veered from traditional sweaters to accessories like caps, leg warmers and even tights. Time to cozy up to one of fall’s top trends!
Check out this Fair Isle deerstalker from ASOS, for those of you who stalk deer?
Here’s a Fair Isle beret from Eugenia Kim, made of baby alpaca (not sure if that’s PETA-approved).One of my favorite Fair Isle incarnations is, of course, these adorable leg warmers by Marc by Marc Jacobs. Wear them tucked into boots or out for Fair Isle fun.
If you like a little bling to go with your Fair Isle, American Eagle Outfitters smattered a scarf with sequins. Perfect for a southern California winter!

The Perfect Transeasonal Piece: Yumi Kim’s Chloe Jacket
10.14.10Yumi Kim‘s known for drapey floral confections in silky fabrics. Their Chloe jacket–a jacket/blouse hybrid with a tie belt is the perfect transeasonal piece, and can take you from office to after-work drinks, no awkward changing in the office bathroom required! Wear it closed or open. We like it because the color looks good on all skin tones, the length flatters and the silk blows cheap polyester versions out of the water.

Mass Produced Hipster Holidays Courtesy of Urban Outfitters Holiday 2010 Lookbook
10.13.10I love Urban Outfitters. I love their sale rack. So much so that I’ll probably be wheeling myself through them when I’m 95, knocking over other shoppers in the process. Anyway, their holiday lookbook is out and I’m not quite sure what holidays they’re referring to. Hipster holidays in upstate New York or in Portland, Oregon? Holidays that require see-through lace skirts and fringed bags? OK. Not that the majority of the collection isn’t cute–especially the fringed poncho, intarsia sweater dress and contrast trim blouse. I would wear those any day of the week (except at the office holiday party or to Midnight Mass).
The Urban Outfitters Holiday 2010 collection will arrive in stores and online at UrbanOutfitters.com next month.

FANTASY BUY: Alexander McQueen Floral-Engraved Leather Boots
10.13.10

Are these for real? And at over 4K, who can afford them (and have the confidence to wear them) except for Daphne Guinness or Lady Gaga? They’re so beautiful, I’m about to spontaneously combust. According to Net-a-porter, they’re a “combination of decoration and direction.” Yeah, direct to the poorhouse, unless you think of them as an “investment.” Yes, let’s do that. After all, the stock market’s shot–all we have left is gold and McQueen.Alexander McQueen Floral-Engraved Leather Boots, $4195 at Net-a-Porter.com
