Take Marc Jacobs to School with BOOKMARC School Supplies
9.1.10I’m a sucker for school supplies and office supplies. I’ve been known to spend hours in the markers section at Staples alone, smelling markers and testing the fine points. So when I found out that one of my favorite designers started designing school supplies, it was truly cataclysmic!
Marc Jacobs is expanding his empire and it includes school supplies under the too-cutesy-for-words label Bookmarc. The line includes pencil cases, tins and colored pencils and can be purchased at Marc by Marc Jacobs shops around the country. Write on, Marc!

VIDEO: Hippie Wood Nymphs in the FREE PEOPLE Behind-the-Scenes of the September Catalog
9.1.10Check out this cool behind-the-scenes video from the Free People September catalog shoot. Set to “Wolf” by Cuddly Toys and shot by photographer Iain McKell.
Cute and upbeat, it shows modern hippie nymphs frolicking around with their hipster boyfriends with close-ups of some of the clothes, which retain the free-spirited Free People aesthetic.

Lace-Up SHOE Extravaganza: Guiseppe Zanotti for Christopher Kane
8.31.10The Fall 2010 shoe collection collab between Guiseppe Zanotti and Christopher Kane resulted in shoes not for the faint of heart. Spiky heels, fierce lace-up cut-outs and a variety of booties, whether with lacing up the ankles or an open toe–will satisfy the inner dominatrix in any girl.

InVEST in the Perfect Transeasonal Piece: The Leather Vest
8.26.10. . . Or sleeveless leather jacket if the idea of a leather vest makes you envision yourself on the back of a Harley wearing feather earrings and way too much fringe. The fab thing about a leather vest (oops, I mean sleeveless leather jacket) is that it gives you the instant cool that a leather jacket gives an outfit without sweating your @ss off. Your arms are free, free!
Today’s sleeveless leather jackets come in different versions–from traditional motorcycle to drapey to studded, and even in feminine blush tones.
Here are some of our picks for the coolest, armless leather toppers. Motorcycle not required.
We LOVE these with a loose-fitting, longer tee or tank, leggings and this season’s lace-up boots that hit above the ankle.
Spon Diogo Raven Leather Vest, $1076 at Not Just a Label
Alexander Wang Leather Studded Sleeveless Biker Jacket, $808 at Farfetch

COOL DESIGN: Love/Hate Hotel Door Sign
8.26.10The Vitrine–purveyors of cool by young and up-and-coming designers–is one of my favorite sites. Their well-edited collection of creative accessories and objects for home come with background on the object’s origin and info on the designer.
Something that caught my eye was the love/hate door sign by designer Amanda Keeley. A typical hotel door hanger transformed by the words love and hate, one on each side, tell how you’re feeling without having to say a word. Perfect for tempestuous relationships!

Spikes, Chains and Metal, Oh, My: Assad Mounser’s Cleopatra Bangles
8.24.10Assad Mousner‘s jewelry can double as weapons of self-defense. With no dearth of spikes, sharp edges and look-at-me bright metal, her bracelets, necklaces and earrings are meant to “look like found objects belonging to a jewelry box from [the 70s] rediscovered in the present” by evoking the freedom and music of the era.
From the F/W 2010 collection, my favorites are the Cleopatra Bangles in bronze, gold and gunmetal.

Soon to be available at Assad Mousner. -
FALL WANT: All Saints Amarante Boots
8.23.10I wish fall would hurry it up and get here already! I’m dying to wear slouchy cropped pants with boots, leggings with boots, pretty much anything with boots. I know there are those brave fashionista souls who soldier on during the summer in boots paired with cute skirts and dresses. However, my feet refuse to be stuck in the sweaty, closed-in jail that anything other than open-toe sandals seem.
These Amarante boots from UK based retailer All Saints (marked down to a reasonable $125) capture the military influence perfectly–sturdy heels, lace-up detailing and a burnished, distressed leather. I can see them with a floral dress and a fleece motorcycle jacket or a high-waisted mini-skirt and over-the-knee socks.
These boots are meant to be versatile and carry you through fall and winter–fashionably–without looking like you’re trying too hard.

LOOT: SAKS Fifth Avenue Sign
8.22.10The Saks Fifth Avenue store in San Diego recently close down due to “underperformance” according to store reps. Sucks for them, but was great for the sales and for the looters (like me) who got fixtures, signage and all that jazz. I came away the huge 3.5 foot letters that spell out SAKS that were on the side of the building and seen by millions! Are they iconic, a collector’s item, future planters, part of an art project or simply garbage? Should I post them on the side of my house as a joke? At any rate, they’ll be part of my home decor for a long, long time as an ode to one of the world’s best department stores.
